Remembering Cody John Ince: A Tribute to a Talented Athlete and Beloved Friend

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Cody John Ince, a former University of Iowa football player, who tragically died on July 15, 2023, at the age of 23.​ Cody, born on December 18, 1999, in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, unexpectedly passed away at his home near Grantsburg, Wisconsin.

Cody Ince played as an offensive lineman for the Hawkeyes from 2018 to 2021. He played in 29 games during his career, starting in 10 of them.​ Ince’s talent and dedication earned him the honorable mention All-Big Ten selection in 2020.​ However, injuries forced him to retire from football last year before he could pursue a potential professional career in the NFL.​

Cody Ince is survived by his fiancée, Olivia Tucker, his parents, Marty and Tammy Ince, and his sister, Carly.​ He will be remembered not only for his achievements on the field but also for his love of football, fishing, hunting, and his strong belief in the importance of family and friendships.

His passing came as a shock to those who knew him, and the cause of his death has not been publicly disclosed. The details surrounding his death may be released in the future.​

Cody Ince’s unexpected demise has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, former teammates, and the entire University of Iowa community.​ Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz expressed his deep sadness in a statement, saying, ″I am incredibly saddened to hear about Cody Ince’s sudden passing.​ Cody was a tremendous young man, valued teammate, and contributor to our program.​″

Former Iowa teammate and wide receiver Tyrone Tracy Jr.​ fondly remembered his friend, describing Cody as not only a great teammate but an amazing person.​ He emphasized the little things that made Cody memorable, like sharing deer jerky and sunflower seeds.​ Cody’s positivity and dedication on the field were admired by all who knew him.

Visitation and a celebration-of-life service were held for Cody Ince on July 22 in Amery, near his hometown of Luck.​ In lieu of flowers, donations were requested in his memory.​

Cody Ince’s sudden departure from this world is a tragic loss for his loved ones and the football community. He will be dearly missed, but his memory will live on through the impact he made on and off the football field.
